Community grant is ‘ace’ for tennis club

TENNIS players at Smalley Lawn Tennis Club are ‘serving’ up an opportunity for more people to get involved in the sport thanks to a grant from a housing provider.

The tennis club has received a £1,766 grant from Amber Valley Housing’s Community Chest Fund, which will buy more equipment and storage units for the club.

This funding will allow more people from the village and surrounding areas, who don’t own tennis equipment, to join the club and play the sport.

Joint club secretary Helen Rastall said: “This is going to give people an opportunity to access the club even if they don’t own any equipment.

“We are a growing club, which until recently had been inactive but now we are attracting a lot more members, especially families.”

The club has also received other grants which are going towards funding two new hard courts.

Sarah Whattam, community development manager for Amber Valley Housing, explained the Community Chest Fund provides grants to local voluntary groups to support activities and events.

“We are dedicated to improving community facilities to benefit the lives of our tenants. Smalley Lawn Tennis Club is a great and undervalued community resource so we are delighted that this money will go towards helping more people access the club.

“We are very pleased to support local residents and community groups through our Community Chest Fund,” said Sarah.
