Picking apart the litter problem

A community has been blitzing the litter in their streets with help from a local affordable housing provider.

Amber Valley Housing got together with local residents of all ages for the community clean-up around the Kew Crescent area of Heanor.

The request for the clean-up was identified at one of AVHL’s Walkabout Wednesday initiatives which is an estate walkabout made up of local residents and housing association staff.

Residents, including a number of young people and local police turned out for the initiative, which took place on Tuesday, May 26.

Skips were provided and all three were full to the brim with rubbish and litter collected from the pavement areas and grass verges. After all the work was done nibbles and sweets were on offer as a reward and two youngsters won prizes for the most amount of litter collected and the most effort put in along the way.

Sarah Whattam, community development manager at Amber Valley Housing, said: “The turn out was great. The day was such a success and everyone had fun along the way. The children were fantastic and were a pleasure to work with. The community spirit was great, it is really rewarding to see a community of all different ages come together in that way.

“Clean ups such as this not only make the community look better but encourage youngsters to take an interest in the environment and to take responsibility for the area in which they live.”
